Shady Hollow - artwork

In 1975, the first Shady Hollow artwork was a picture drawn by Michael Marchant. It took him a while to do each one, so Michael ended up only drawing about four or five.

We went to a printer, Mark Davies, and he changed the script on the picture to what it is now and also printed up the name as a stand alone sticker. You could get black, red, blue, green, yellow and clear Center with a black outline. That sticker really stood the test of time even to this day.

In 1974, I first met Simon Buttonshaw and Charlie Bartlett (Charles of the Sea). We all became good friends. One day, out of the blue, Simon said “Wayne Lynch is going to shape me a board, can you glass it”? I nearly fell over, “suppose so”! I went to pick up the blank and I was lucky enough to watch him finish it off before bringing it home.

The board had one of Michael’s picture stickers on the bottom with “shaped by Wayne Lynch” below it. 42 years later, I was able to buy the board from a collector so I now have the first Shady Hollow board shaped by Wayne.

Simon also did an ink drawing of Krishna and Radharani in a garden with Shady Hollow written above it. Luckily I came into possession of it a few years ago. It’s a classic because it was one of my personal boards shaped by Michael Pierce with artwork by Simon.

A few years late (early ‘80s), Simon said it’s time to update your sticker. I left it up to him and he came up with the tree and wave logo. I could not believe it, it was and still is so good. I use that logo as a glassing sticker that I put on every Trigger Bro’s board that I do. It’s my way of celebrating Shady Hollow. It keeps me focussed on what I’m doing!

Simon and I during the ‘80s went up to Angourie every year and stayed at Charles and Tamba’s house with their two kids, Charta and Vyasa.

Simon still works for Quicksilver has head of the art department. He has also done work for Rip Curl, Gash and Globe. His t-shirt designs are legendary and he is one of the most gifted artists I know.

Along with the change to a symbol and different font, Simon also thought I should change the way I sign my name. He sent me countless signatures of my name on Quiksilver letterhead until we finally decided on one version. And I’m happy to say, this is still how I sign my name today!
