The originals - board collection
Shady Hollow x Richard Evans
I made this board as an order in 1979. Richard Evans shaped it. A short while ago, the owner came into the shop and asked if I wanted it back. I couldn’t believe it! The board is in near perfect condition. It’s the only board I’m allowed to keep inside the house.
SHADY HOLLOW X GARY TAYLOR
This is the last Shady Hollow board I made and was never surfed. Gary Taylor shaped it and Simon Buttonshaw painted the mural on the deck.
An absolute classic board, I love looking at it every day.
Circa 1994.
SHADY HOLLOW X WAYNE LYNCH
This is the first Shady Hollow board that Wayne shaped for Simon. I was able to buy it 42 years later and stands at the top of collectable boards that I have. Circa 1977.
SHADY HOLLOW X MICHAEL MARCHANT
This board was one of the first Shady Hollow boards I ever made. It was shaped by Michael Marchant and he also hand drew the logo, making it extremely rare. Circa 1976.
SHADY HOLLOW X MICHAEL MARCHANT
This board was one of Michael Marchant’s own boards that he shaped in 1976. We made this board in Red Hill while we were still making boards with Ian Treloar.
SHADY HOLLOW X JOHN JOLLY
In 1983, my good friend Ron Roozen said he was moving to Margaret River for good. So I made him one last board. A red deck, double flyer, diamond tail. A couple of years ago, Ron rings me and asks if I can go to a guy’s house in Balnarring and pay $80 for a board that he saw online. It was the red deck board. I patched it up and called Ron to ask what he wanted me to do with it now. He said, “just hang on to it for a long time”! Circa 1983
SHADY HOLLOW X JOHN JOLLY
I made this board for Charlie Bartlett’s son Vyasa. I gave it to him in 1985 when Simon and I went to Angourie.
About 10 years ago, I saw the board out the front of the local surf shop in Yamba. I wasn’t able to buy it because we’d flown up and I couldn’t take it back. Believe it or not, this happened 4 years in a row. Finally a friend of mine, Gordon McDonald said he was driving up to Yamba and did I want him to buy the board and put it on the roof. 3 weeks later, I had the board and it only cost $80.
I restored it and when it was done, I put it in the car to bring home from work. As I started the car, the radio came on and I heard that Vyasa had died in an accident.
If there’s one thing that I believe in, it’s that I was meant to get Vyasa’s board.
Circa 1985
SHADY HOLLOW X JOHN JOLLY
This is the first twin fin that I made when I moved into Point Leo. The board really belongs to Phil Newman, but luckily he lets me look after it. Circa 1978.
SHADY HOLLOW X MICHAEL PIERCE
This board was one of my own. It was shaped by Michael Pierce and all the artwork was from Simon Buttonshaw. A very important board to me.
The outline is a classic double flyer swallow tail. Circa 1977.
SHADY HOLLOW X Ken Reimers
This is the last original Shady Hollow I made that was surfed. Ken Reimers shaped it and I only surfed it once. Needless to say, it’s in excellent condition. Circa 1995. Contrasted here against the remastered Ken Reimers.
